My Origin Story

Hi! I’m Alicyn, a cancer survivor, a Christian, married to my best friend, homeschooling mom to three young girls and a true lover of life. There is something to be said about almost losing your life that makes you love your life that much more. I love life, and I decided that I want to share my love of life with whom ever would like to receive it.

I was born with a rare cancer that took my right eye and left me feeling damaged, broken, and less of a human than anyone else. I felt like I had to hide who I was from those around me, or they would find out how broken I was and not want anything to do with me. I remember being sick, and just wanting to run away from it all and to be normal. I wanted to live, to experience life, have fun and make memories. That fighting desire I had that kept me on this earth has persisted in every aspect of my life. I love life and I want to make the most of my time here.

Life is a funny thing. I grew up being bullied for being different, always praying for just ONE friend, anyone that would be willing to see me for who I truly was. God answered my prayer, but not until I was 23, and that’s when I met my best friend who loved me enough to become mine for forever. Together we have six children, three girls with us in life and a girl and two boys who have left this life and live in Heaven.

I had all of my children with a midwife, our first was born at a birth center and our other two were born at home. Although I am a cancer survivor, the effects of it shape my life to this day. A good amount of modern medicine doesn’t work with my body. Epidurals, morphine, some antibiotics etc. they don’t work as they should for me. As a result, I have found the merit of herbs and other non-conventional healing practices such as chiropractic care. That being said, if it were not for conventional medicine I would not be here, and my children are all too familiar with the bubble gum thickness of amoxicillin, but I have found the merit of healing from the earth as well.

Parenthood is a funny thing as well. I always said that I would NEVER homeschool. Well as they say, never say never! After the birth of our first daughter, I started to go down the rabbit hole of homeschooling without even realizing it. I looked for ways I could teach her, help her explore the world, and love it as much as I do. Now, five years later, we just finished up homeschooling preschool and look forward to starting kindergarten in the fall!

I love being a homemaker. I am by no means a professional cook or baker, in fact all five of my younger brothers and sisters can tell you the story of the time I almost killed our dad with my bad cheese lasagna with crunchy noodles and everything. How was I suppose to know that cheese isn’t suppose to stink? I watched Madeline as a kid and I distinctly remember the scene of them smelling the cheese and it stinking! To my dad’s credit, he is the only one that bravely ate every bite on his plate of my hard work because he loved and respected me that much. He did in fact live, he has an iron stomach for sure, and I have since learned to love cooking and baking from scratch. I use to be so intimidated by it! I was so surprised by how reasonable if not easy it is.

Now you might ask, how in the world do you keep your sanity on a day to day basis? I run. Every. Single. Day. On top of that, I believe in God and His Son Jesus Christ. I cannot tell you how many times I have dropped to my knees in tears not knowing how I would continue, praying and pleading with my Father in Heaven for help, and every time somehow after my tears have run dry and I have prayed my heart out, I have the strength to stand up one foot at a time and take one more step. Before I know it, I have run a mile and I have the strength for another.

Everyone has an origin story, this is mine.
